Outlook vs. Thunderbird - The Final Verdict

Switching to Outlook from Thunderbird was one of the biggest computer related mistakes i've ever made. It took almost an entire workday to make the transistion, and Outlook has been beset by performance problems ever since (see below). To make matters worse, returning to Thunderbird has become almost impossible as it crashes every time I try to import my email back from Outlook, which is going to force me to continue using Outlook until I have time to switch, and thus loose a huge number of archived emails. Worse still, MozBackup seems to fail to restore my older Thunderbird email because I upgraded to version 1.5. Awesome!

Confusing? Use Gmail. If you're a casual user, it looks like Gmail is the way to go. If you're like me and want an offline client, then Thunderbird is clearly still the winner, just NEVER EVER try to mess with Outlook or you'll be up the creek.

I just switched from Outlook to Thunderbird and found the way to do it by advice of the mozillazine. The best approach is to IMPORT to Outlook EXPRESS first, then make Outlook Express your primary mail client, and THEN import that to Thunderbird. Yeah, pain in the ass. But there's more - I had a subfolder for e-mail that was like FOLDERNAME, LTD. and the comma or the period in the folder name kept the subdirectories of that folder from importing. As soon as I removed the comma and period, it imported correctly from Outlook Express.

What's bugging me now is, I don't have a good task list with due dates that are clearly displayed, or an easier way to label folders, and the font sizes and signatures are a pain to work with. Nevertheless, I still like Tbird for some reason - maybe it's because we can customize it. Who the hell knows... I just find myself trying to make it more like Outlook all the time.
