Regional Jets Stink!

nwa_sm_crj.gifI just flew from New York to Milwaukee on board what is becoming the new standard in aviation for short(ish) flights - the Regional Jet. In this case, the Canadair RJ. Basically, these are small jets designed to serve markets more frequently and more cheaply than full sized airliners, which are both fine goals. The problem is they stink. There is virtually no legroom, your head hits the ceiling if you approach 6ft, the overhead bins are so small you can barely fit a laptop in, and the things will produce claustrophobia in even the most seasoned flyer.

I am a CRJ200 pilot and I can tell you that this person is wrong. I am 5' 11'' and I can sit and walk in the CRJ with my uniform cap on. I can't do this in the ERJ145 jet but he said CRJ. I put my 30 lbs. overnight suit case in the overhead everyday. If you are the last one after everyone has put their things up, you may run out of space. That's in every plane when all the seats are full. A laptop will always fit under the seat. The bathroom in the CRJ id very small and cramped. I guess that they wanted to make more room for people and bags than just make a place that only some of the people will spend less than 5 min. Is it smaller than a 737? Yes. It is designed that way. Your car is smaller, rides rougher and does not carry as much as a limo. I don't see everyone driving limo's and crying about regular cars are small. Your car does what you need even though it has weak points. Aircraft are the same. Sure a 747 is the best ride in town but you don't want to pay $3000 to fly to the next state. You also don't want the airport to expand to handle 747's. The CRJ flies higher and a little faster(often speed is reduced somewhat to conserve fuel) than most large jets. Most 737's can only climb to 37,000 Ft. The CRJ can climb to 41,000 Ft. Max speed is Mach .85(570 mph) in the CRJ and it's Mach .82 in the 737. It's a blance of seats needed, money and numbers of aircraft needed. I used to fly a 19 seat prop aircraft. People complained that it was to small. We went to 32 seat prop with a flight attendent. Still to small and it's a prop. Now we have jets. People still complain. We could fly only 747's and people would complain that a ticket cost $2000 to fly, They make to much noise(don't let them fly untill I get up in the morning), don't make the airport bigger either. I would like to fly a larger plane but I fly what they give me and try not to complain. Take the bus or train next time then tell me how you liked that. I don't see anyone writing about that.
